While they may not get the attention their cousins on East Avenue get in this community, the KW Siskins, formerly the Waterloo Siskins, have been quietly and consistently churning out hockey talent for the last 90 years.
From humble beginnings at the affectionately named Waterloo Bubble to the modern confines of Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, the Siskins have become a stalwart of the Jr. B hockey landscape in Ontario.
This weekend marks 90 years of Siskins hockey and the team is celebrating with an alumni game on Sunday morning.
Speaking as a guest on The Mike Farwell Show, KW Siskins General Manager Brian Huddle said the club is expecting it to be full house.
“We’re looking forward to the biggest crowd of the year, hopefully. We want to pack in the rec center, as difficult as that is, to celebrate 90 years of Siskins hockey.”
Huddle said the team has confirmed 46 past players will be in attendance which will make for a fun day. Many will be participating in the alumni game, prior to the current Siskins match-up with the Stratford Warriors.
Huddle said the club has been making a concerted effort to reconnect with their alumni.
“I think there has been a little bit of a disconnect with the alumni the last little bit. We’re definitely trying to bridge that gap and bring them back into the fold. At the end of the day, the alumni are the lifeblood of the organization and we want to do more.”
Huddle mentioned an alumni golf tournament was in the works.
The KW Siskins 90th anniversary alumni game goes Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. Puck drop is set for 11:00 a.m.
The Siskins then take on the Stratford Warriors at 1:30 p.m.
