If volunteering is part of your New Year’s resolutions, Community Support Connections has an opportunity for people here in Waterloo Region.
The Meals on Wheels program delivers homestyle meals to more than 8,500 people in need living in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and North Dumfries.
“The people who volunteer to deliver meals regularly deliver a route in the neighbourhood they live in,” Will Pace, Executive Director of Community Support Connections, said. “They will get to meet the same 10 or 12 people every day, so you really start to develop a friendship with these people. You get to know them, their personalities, and they’re really just amazing people.”
According to Pace, not only does the program deliver much-needed food, but a chance for isolated members of the community, sometimes seniors, to connect face-to-face with someone who cares about their wellbeing.
“It’s a great opportunity to just when you’re dropping off that meal, to just have a five minute conversation. Really make them feel valued, and feel a human connection,” added Pace.
Drivers can choose their own route, and are reimbursed for the kilometres they drive while en route to the homes in need.
