Suspects drove in reverse over a sidewalk to get away from Guelph police

Police in Guelph are on the lookout for two suspects who drove over a sidewalk and made a high-speed getaway to avoid speaking with officers.

It happened over the noon hour, Monday, around Speedvale Avenue West and Edinburgh Road North in the Royal City. Police say a call came in about two men slumped over and asleep in a commercial parking lot.

Officers found a grey Mazda CX-5, backed into a parking space, with the rear tires right against the curb.

They boxed it in with their police cruiser and approached the two men they could see sleeping inside.

Officials say when the driver woke up to find police at his door, he refused to roll down the window, and instead backed up over the curb and drove across the sidewalk, right onto Speedvale Avenue West.

The vehicle was last seen northbound on Edinburgh Road North at a high rate of speed, and police did not chase them out of concern for public safety.

Police later found out the two men had been parked there for about four hours.

The suspects are both described by police as brown, 30-40 years of age, short black hair, black facial hair, and both were wearing black jackets.

Investigators want to hear from anyone who knows anything about the suspects, and they can call Guelph Police, or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by clicking here.
