How to safely use fireworks in Waterloo ahead of Diwali celebrations

The City of Waterloo is hoping to stay on top of fireworks uses on special occasions.

The city is reminding people that you should celebrate safely and within the allowed hours on celebrations like Victoria Day, Canada Day, Lunar New Year, and Diwali, which is less than a week away.

Fireworks are only permitted on private property from dusk until 11 p.m., and they must to be handled by adults aged 18 or older.

The city suggests that if you’re planning on using fireworks, you should consider notifying your neighbours in advance.

In July, a 37-year-old Kitchener man was charged with assault after two separate incidents during Canada Day celebrations, including one that injured a Waterloo councilor.

The City of Guelph is considering banning fireworks for personal or private use.

If you’re neighbours are setting off fireworks past the allowed time, you can contact the city at (519)747-8785.

Head to the City of Waterloo’s website to find out more about fireworks and their restrictions.
