Impaired driving leads to ‘major damage’, power outage in Guelph

A collision on the north side of Guelph caused “major damage” and a “significant power outage” according to police in that city.

Guelph Police sent out a message on social media around 10:40, Wednesday night, about a single vehicle striking a hydro pole, downing the pole and its wires at Woodlawn Road East and Inverness Drive near Victoria Road North.

A spokesperson with the Guelph Police Service has since indicated that vehicle had three occupants, though there were no serious injuries reported. The driver of that vehicle has been arrested for impaired driving.

A post on X from Guelph Police on Wednesday said Woodlawn would be closed from Country Club Drive to Victoria “all night and into most of Thursday.”

Just after 8 a.m. on Thursday, Woodlawn Road reopened to traffic in Guelph – though Inverness Road remains closed for hydro work.

Social media posts from Alectra, and the Guelph Hydro power outage map, show 2,200 homes and businesses were left without power at the peak of the disruption. The outage has since been resolved.
