Over the summer, the Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford-Perth (HSKWSP) launched the Better Together capital campaign, aiming to raise $6 million.
The money will be used in the construction of a new community outreach centre, on its Kitchener property at 250 Riverbend Dr. Adam Stephens, director, marketing and community engagement at HSKWSP told The Mike Farwell Show the new centre couldn’t come at a better time.
“With this increase in surrenders with dogs with behavioural issues, this expanded space really provides us with that opportunity to be able to provide enhanced programming for individuals.”
Stephens said there has been a noticeable uptick in the number of dog being turned over to HSKWSP that have behavioural problems as a result of the pandemic. He says it’s a lack of socialization and proper training that has led to disobedience, aggression and trouble interacting with other people and other dogs.
He says this new space will allow HSKWSP staff to better engage with and support pet owners. The new outreach center is expected to open in July 2025.
The $6 million will also allow the HSKWSP to renovate and expand its current facility including the surgical area and purchase a new mobile vet clinic.
“WE service 14 different municipalities within our region, so it’s a huge territory to cover.” He said, adding “With this community outreach vehicle we’ll be able to provide support for individuals in those rural areas that traditionally haven’t been able to enjoy any of that support.”
