Harvest Fall Food Drive aims for 22,000 meals this year

By Justine Fraser

The Harvest Fall Food Drive is taking place around Kitchener-Waterloo from 12 to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 in an effort to collect fresh food and cash donations. It’s a one-day only event.

The food drive is in its seventh year running, and so far The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has provided over 80,000 meals. A media release states the organization is aiming to provide 22,000 meals for over 58,600 adults and children experiencing food insecurity this year.

“The Harvest Food Drive is a great way for our community to come together and help replenish The Food Bank’s supply of fresh produce,” says Kim Wilhelm, CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region in the release. “When people donate items like carrots, onions, and potatoes, it allows us to offer more healthy and nutritious options to the local food assistance programs we support. This means that families facing food insecurity can access fresh, wholesome food that’s so important for their health and well-being.”

Anyone out grocery shopping is being asked to pick up a few perishable items or donate cash to one of the volunteers onsite at various Sobeys and Zehrs locations. Carrots, potatoes and onions are a recommended buy. Cash donations are also accepted.

Online donations are also accepted at thefoodbank.ca/thanksgiving.

Conestoga Meats will be doing a Thanksgiving match, for every $1 donated during the drive they will provide four meals. Typically $1 raised only provides two meals.
