Waterloo Region takes part in the Terry Fox Run

Runners across the country and the region will be in stride on Sunday for the annual Terry Fox Run.

In Waterloo, the Terry Fox Run will begin in Waterloo Park beginning at 10 a.m., with registration opening at 8:45 a.m. and an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m. Another run in Wilmot Township will start at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting at the Wilmot Recreation Complex in Baden. Cambridge will begin its run at 12 pm at riverside park off rogers drive just past the grandstand.

The events are open to the public for those who want to walk, cycle, or wheel in in 1km, 2km or 5km routes.

The annual non-competitive fundraiser was inspired by Fox’s famous Marathon of Hope during the summer of 1980, after he lost his leg to osteogenic sarcoma when he was 18 years old. He started in St. John’s, Newfoundland and made his way across the rest of Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.

Fox ended his run on September 1, 1980, in Thunder Bay after the cancer returned in his lungs. Fox passed away on June 28, 1981.

All funds go to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research.
