Guelph landlord fined for inoperable and missing smoke and CO alarms

A landlord in Guelph has been fined for smoke and carbon monoxide alarm violations, with officials saying “the alarms were expired, not maintained in operating condition or not present.”

The Guelph Fire Department on Wednesday announced on social media the results of the court case that began in 2025.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Matt Valeriote tells 570 NewsRadio the alarm problems were discovered during an inspection of a six-unit residential building in central Guelph.

“During this inspection, multiple fire code violations related to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms were discovered,” he said.

The fire department did not want to reveal the exact address or identify the corporation that owns the property, or name the landlord looking after the site.

Valeriote said both the landlord and the corporation charged under the fire protection and prevention act, found guilty and fined a total of $2,870.

He said, “Alarms, when properly installed and maintained in operating condition, provide the early detection required so that occupants are able to safely escape in the event of a fire.”
