Andonovski announced as Kitchener Rangers captain for 2024-25

The Kitchener Rangers have announced that defenceman, Matthew Andonovski, has been named as the club’s new captain for the 2024-25 season.

The 19-year-old from Markham, Ontario, is entering his fourth season with the team, which they say has brought him a wealth of experience, determination, and a steadfast commitment to the team.

“It’s an honour to be named the captain of the Rangers,” said Andonovski. “It’s a very historic franchise and to be one of those names is pretty special.”

Andonovski was originally selected by the Rangers in the 2021 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection, being taken with the 62 pick overall in the fourth round. He has played 175 games in the OHL, scoring 7 goals and 52 points during that time. Although, his defensive skills are at the forefront of his game, with the team saying in a statement that his “relentless shot-blocking, and tough, competitive play” have set him apart.

“Matthew’s leadership on and off the ice, his work ethic, and his commitment to his teammates are exactly what we want in a leader,” said Head Coach Jussi Ahokas.

This comes as Andonovski was also selected as a fifth-round pick by the Ottawa Senators in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, earning a contract back in July.

“I’m excited to get to know all of the new guys and get the season going, I think we have a great group here,” said Andonovski.

The team also announced the remainder of the team’s leadership group, with Trent Swick, Lucas Ellinas, and Cameron Reid being names alternate captains for the season. The team says each of the players have demonstrated strong leadership both on and off the ice, adding that they will play a crucial role in supporting Andonovski as the Rangers push for a successful season.

“Trent, Luke, and Cam have also shown strong leadership, and together, this group will play key roles in guiding our team this season,” said Ahokas.

The team now gets prepared for its upcoming Preseason Showcase at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium from August 30 to September 1, welcoming the Saginaw Spirit, Erie Otters, and Brantford Bulldogs to town for a series of exhibition games.
