Public meeting coming for 44-storey tower set near Grand River Hospital in Kitchener

A couple of high-rise towers could sprout up across the street from the Grand River Hospital in Kitchener.
A proposed development for a 44-storey tower at 864 and 872 King St. West, the site of the former CTV Kitchener building, will head to a public meeting for an amendment to the Zoning Bylaw on Sept. 18.
The applicant for the development is King Pine Kitchener Inc., and development planning documents were created by MHBC Planning.
As proposed, the development would include 455 residential units, with six storeys of indoor parking, and two levels of underground parking. In total, the building would have 261 vehicle parking spaces.
A traffic study has been completed for the site, showing the development could generate 186 new vehicle trips in the area per day, but it also adds that the surrounding area would not need any changes or road improvements to accommodate those trips.
The site is perfect for this kind of development according to the applicant, located centrally in Kitchener near parks and amenities, and the ION train runs right in front of the building.
In addition, the development would leave room for a future development on the same site. According to the applicant, that could be another tower with at least 37 floors.
To build on the site, the City of Kitchener will need to amend the Zoning Bylaw.
A public meeting is scheduled to discuss the amendment, which will take place on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
