Tips for safe fireworks displays in Cambridge this Canada Day

Fire officials in Cambridge are offering reminders to the public to keep everyone safe while enjoying fireworks this Canada Day long-weekend.

John Percy, Fire Prevention Officer with the Cambridge Fire Department, reminds people to keep fireworks away from structures that could catch fire.

“Keep it far away from buildings, trees, any dry grass,” said Percy. “[You] always want to supervise children when they use sparklers because those are very hot as well.”

In Cambridge, fireworks displays on privately owned property are allowed from dusk until 11 p.m. on Canada Day only.

Fireworks are prohibited in public parks and on roads.

“The reality is, they are an explosive material, whether they are the family fireworks or the public ones that are set off,” said Percy. “There are requirements behind them, they could start a fire.”

Percy added that there are bylaws in place to protect the public during fireworks displays and that if you spot any fireworks displays that you perceive to be dangerous, call 9-1-1.
