GRT hosting public consultations on how to improve transit

Grand River Transit (GRT) is hosting a public consultation to engage with riders on how it can plan the next several years.

The open house will take place online via Zoom at 7:00 p.m. on June 27 — tonight.

In the last several years the transit agency has reported record ridership numbers. This along with the growing number of people coming to Waterloo Region means the government needs to figure out a plan for improving the system.

“Providing a robust and reliable transit service is an essential part of creating an attractive and liveable community,” Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo, said.

The meeting will focus on GRT’s business plans that will be a “roadmap” to guide investments from 2025 to 2030 and beyond, the press release reads.

Community feedback will be gathered to help GRT plan the Conventional Bus and ION Train Business Plan, MobilityPLUS Business Plan and Township Transportation Strategy.

The guides will focus on expansion, how to make transit easier to use, where the government can improve and how it should prioritize frequency and speed of service.

The plans piggyback off of the region’s other priorities and commitments including climate action strategies.

GRT said more consultation opportunities will be held over the next several months.
