Former Ranger Matt Sop inks deal with Iowa Wild

The 2024 Overage Player of the Year in the Ontario Hockey League will have a new home for the upcoming season.

Former Rangers forward Matthew Sop has inked a one-year, one-way American Hockey League (AHL) contract with the Iowa Wild. They are the affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.

The General Manager of Iowa, Matt Hendricks, made the announcement on Monday.

Sop becomes the third Rangers player from the 23-24 season to sign a professional deal. He joins Hunter Brzustewicz who signed with Calgary and Carson Rehkopf who signed with Seattle.

Sop recorded 43 goals and 47 assists with the Rangers in the 2023-24 regular season. Those were both statistical career-highs for Sop. He added 3 goals and 3 assists in the 2024 OHL playoffs against Erie and London.

Sop was a homegrown player playing all five years of his junior career with his hometown Rangers. He was drafted in the seventh round in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.
