Threats of violence put Kitchener school under brief hold and secure

A school in Kitchener was put under a brief hold and secure on Thursday morning after the Kitchener Market received threats of violence.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, officers responded to the Kitchener Market after they received a call from an unknown caller threatening to bring a gun to the area of the market and ‘start shooting’.

Through investigation, police determined that the call was made from outside of the country and was a ‘swatting call’, a harassment tactic used by prank callers to dispatch officers to a fake crisis.

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) announced that Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, located near the Kitchener Market, was placed under hold and secure as a safety precaution just after 11 a.m.

The school board added that students continued to learn in the classrooms.

The hold and secure was quickly lifted around 11:20 a.m.

Police continue to investigate.
