Cambridge Pride Street Party promises bigger and better this year

By Matt Hutcheson

Cambridge Pride week is going out with a bang.

The 2nd Annual Cambridge Pride Street Party will take over Main Street on Saturday afternoon. Grand River Pride organized the party again this year and has expanded the footprint to include the intersection of Main and Water Street as well as a section of Water from Dickson Street to Imperial Lane.

Over 3,000 people turned out last year. Event organizer and Grand River Pride co-founder Eric Bolton told CityNews 570, that with such a great response last year, they wanted to make sure this year’s party had more of everything.

“With the bigger street closure this year we are able to have a larger stage. Invite more vendors to be a part of it. Invite more performances and have the performances going on for more of the day.”

The Main St. Bridge will also be closed as part of the Street Party. The Idea Exchange will be providing events for families on the bridge. Bolton said it was important for organizers to make sure everyone felt included, especially families.

“We’ve had events in the past that because of alcohol being served, they were 19-plus. But we try to make all our events, especially for Pride Week and Ayr Pride as family friendly and free of charge” he said. “We want to make it accessible and have something for everyone.”

If you can’t make it Saturday, Grand River Pride will be hosting the first-ever Ayr Pride Party in the Park. It’s happening June 15, at Centennial Park. It’s also free and family-friendly.
