Expanded service and new bus routes coming to the Cambridge Business Park area

By Matt Hutcheson

It’s an expansion that is long overdue.

Late last year, Waterloo Regional Council approved the expansion of Grand River Transit bus service in the area as part of the 2024 regional budget. The expansion will see the addition of a new bus route to better serve the business park, the River Mill neighbourhood and the new Conestoga College campus.

It will also see the addition of a BusPLUS route to the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

A report to council detailed the need for expanded service.

“Demand for Route 72 has reached capacity, and the surrounding residential area and business park are growing. Additionally, Conestoga College opened its Reuter Drive campus in September 2022, and opportunities to better serve the campus area were raised during the College U-Pass referendum.”

Beginning Sept. 3, route 72 will become a conventional bus route. It will run Monday to Friday, 18 hours a day with buses running every 30 minutes. Buses will depart from the Sportsworld terminal.

New bus stops will be added along Cherry Blossom Rd., Royal Oak Dr., Speedsville Rd. and sections of Fountain St. N.

The new routes will also provide additional access to GO services at the Sportsworld terminal for riders from Breaslau.

Over the next two weeks, transit staff will conduct public engagement to get the word out and gather feedback about the changes.
