Fencing installed along Ezra Avenue for St. Patrick’s Day weekend
Fencing has been installed along Ezra Avenue in advance of St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
It’s the third straight year the road is being blocked off to prevent students from gathering there for an unsanctioned street party.
The last two years, the blockades have kept partiers off Ezra Avenue but they’ve just crossed the road and swarmed the Marshall Street area instead.

Thousands of students attended the gathering last year, including those who travelled from out of town. There were more than 200 charges laid, 18 arrests made, and two police officers sustained minor injuries.
Wilfrid Laurier University is urging its student body to not take part in any street party, saying they are dangerous and a safety risk.
In addition to parking restrictions around the university district this weekend, Laurier said there will be a no-guest policy in residences, noise bylaws will be in place, and there will be enhanced security on campus.
According to the City of Waterloo, an operational plan is in place for Mar. 17 and it’s being led by the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS).
Officers will be patrolling the area on foot, in cruisers, and on bikes.

Last year, WRPS Chief Mark Crowell said it’s “unfortunate” that people continue to take part in the unsanctioned street parties. He called the gatherings unlawful and said they pose significant safety concerns to the public and emergency service providers.
