With 10 weeks to go before the Ontario Special Olympic Spring Games, Waterloo Regional Police and Special Olympics Ontario announce the “Draft An Athlete” program.
Donors to the program can give $500 to help one athlete pay for expenses during the games. This includes, food, travel, accommodations and competition fees.
More than 2,500 athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff are expected during the event, running from May 23 to May 26. The games will feature five different events, including 10 pin bowling, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting and swimming.
Police Chief Mark Crowell said WRPS has raised a lot of money for the games already and is hoping for it to continue up to the games and beyond.
“The spirit of Special Olympics fundraising is to pay it forward, even to the next community, so that we can ensure the athletes are supported year round,” said Crowell. “We can’t wait for things to come together.”
Regional police announced they raised over $50,000 during the Polar Plunge last Saturday.
Waterloo Region was set to host the games in 2020, but were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
