Sop’s heroics help Rangers snap losing skid

The Kitchener Rangers snapped their five-game losing streak on Friday night after a dramatic comeback.

The Blueshirts were down 2-0 entering the 3rd period against the Guelph Storm and were trailing 2-1 in the final minute of regulation.

However, Matthew Sop scored the game-tying goal before netting the overtime winner on a penalty shot as Kitchener beat the Storm 3-2.

“I practice that one a lot, lucky for me, I’ve got goalies that like to take some shootout moves in practice a lot, play a lot of shootout,” Sop said. “I’m just looking if he’s in or out of his net, and just try to make a move.”

The overtime goal was Sop’s 30th goal of the season, and fourth overtime goal.

Rangers Head Coach Jussi Ahokas said it was a much-needed team win.

“We started getting pucks to the net, and I think that was the big key for us,” said Ahokas. “The team showed (a lot) from getting back from 2-0 into 2-2 and then winning in overtime. That was a big thing for us, showed our character of the team.”
