Coyotes begin mating season, with sightings expected to go up

January and February mark the mating season for coyotes.

Officials for the cities of Kitchener and Cambridge note sightings are expected to increase during the next few months as they begin to move around more.

During these months, coyotes will also find new dens before having pups in the spring.

Rachel Voros, the Natural Areas Project Manager for the City of Kitchener, said this is a natural occurrence as coyotes search for mates and defend territory.

“Areas that are wild, such as our natural areas, are perfect habitats for coyotes,” said Voros. “Especially if there is a permanent water source that they can be close by to.”

The City of Kitchener received 18 calls related to coyote and pet interactions in 2023.

The Cambridge Humane Society said all dogs should be on leashes when going to parks or trails. All cats should be kept inside during the season as well.
