Last tent leaves Roos Island encampment

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

For the first time since the summer of 2022, Roos Island in Victoria Park is clear of tents.

The City of Kitchener has confirmed that the last occupant of a long-standing encampment has now left the area, but they were not evicted.

City staff said they’re in communication with community partners, who told city hall the individual has received appropriate care and shelter.

The encampment began as a housing demonstration nearly 18 months ago on July 6, 2022 with those on the island calling for better access to housing for those experiencing homelessness.

The city had partially closed access to the island April 26 of last year, citing safety and privacy concerns for the encampment community. A protest followed the next day, and three Kitchener residents were charged, though some of those charges were dropped.

According to the city, a renewal project for Roos Island is still on track. The plans are expected to bring safety improvements to the heritage bridge, restore the bandstand and complete other landscaping work.

There are plans for a partial reopening in the spring, including access to the pathway through the island. A full reopening of Roos Island in Victoria Park is expected in late spring.
