Sewer blockage closes Grand River Collegiate, Rosemount until new year

Grand River Collegiate Institute (GRCI) will stay closed until the new year.

The Kitchener high school and Rosemount at GRCI were closed Tuesday and Wednesday because of a sewer blockage.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) said work is still ongoing to resolve the issue.

WRDSB Superintendent Bill Lemon explained where the sewer blockage is located.

“The location that we can determine to this point seems to be under the physical plants of the schools. We need to gain access to that drain in order to take a look at it,” said Lemon.

Lemon also explained that it is too early to determine the cause of the blockage.

Currently, students will remain in online learning until the blockage has been cleared.

“Our teachers have classroom spaces that we call virtual learning environments. To this point they are mostly used to post assignments and as a digital bulletin board for the class. What they’re going to utilize is to continue to remind students of content that’s being posted there,” stated Lemon.

The goal is to welcome students back to classrooms on Jan. 8 after the holiday break.
