Lyft announced on Tuesday it has expanded its operations into Kitchener-Waterloo and London.
Users of the company’s app can order a ride between Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph. Riders were able to start booking on Tuesday.
The company first launched in Toronto in 2017 and has since expanded into other cities including Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Since then, the company said it has given 68 million rides to 2.5 million “unique Canadian riders.” The company is based out of San Francisco, California.
One of the first ride sharing services to come to Waterloo Region was Uber in July 2015. It caused some controversy at the time with regional council and local taxi companies because they were not following the local taxi bylaw. In 2016, the region passed and launched a new Vehicle-For-Hire bylaw to include ride sharing services.
Other ride sharing services in the area include Lokal, which is owned by Waterloo Taxi, and Waterloo-based RideON.
