An overdose alert has been issued for Waterloo Region after a spike in reported ODs in the last week, including almost two dozen in a two-day span.
The Waterloo Region Integrated Drugs Strategy issued the community drug alert on Oct. 27.
The agency said there were 33 reported cases of overdoses and drug poisonings locally from Oct. 21 to Oct. 26, and 21 of them occurred in the last 48 hours.
Community health partners have reported seeing long lasting sedation, said multiple doses of naloxone were required, and that some people had to be hospitalized.
Drug users are being urged to take precautions like never using illicit substances alone, always carry naloxone, and visit the Consumption and Treatment Services site in downtown Kitchener.
