Skunk in Cambridge tests positive for rabies

Region of Waterloo (ROW) Public Health is issuing health and safety reminders to the public after rabies was detected in a local skunk.

The health unit announced Oct. 26 that a skunk in Cambridge tested positive for the disease and there’s been one reported human exposure.

The affected individual received medical attention as rabies can pose serious risks, including death if it’s left untreated.

Public health said everyone should avoid close contact with wildlife and don’t touch them, even if they seem friendly.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the area with soapy water and seek medical care. You should also report it to ROW Public Health at 519-575-4440.
