After disappointment for Canadian Women’s National Team at the World Cup, Kitchener can shift its focus to the local hockey team.
Individual tickets go on sale for the 2023-24 Kitchener Rangers season on Tuesday. Aug. 1.
After last year’s veteran Kitchener Rangers squad failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs, Mike Farwell, Rangers play-by-play broadcaster, said that the team was headed for a reset.
That’s why #NewWave has been used in announcements from the team during the offseason.

That messaging coincides with the hiring of new head coach Jussi Ahokas, who brings plenty of experience and success coaching juniors in Finland, and the youth movement set to take over the roster.
“You’ve got a brand new head coach with a different philosophy coming in and you’ve got a lot of exciting young players that have been already signed or drafted,” said Farwell. “I think what we’re seeing now is the beginning of that cycle for this Kitchener Rangers team that should lead it to a championship. Youth is served with this year’s edition of the Rangers.”
As for Ahokas, Farwell said that he might be unknown in North America, but his track record of coaching players this age is impeccable. That is backed up by his multiple gold medals as the head coach of Team Finland in 2016 (U-18) and 2019 (U-20), and his Coach of the Year award while coaching KooKoo in SM-Liiga in 2020.
There are no official roster decisions made yet as training camp has yet to start, but Farwell said fans should see some familiar faces. Especially on the blue line with defencemen Simon Motew, Matt Andonovksi and Hunter Brzustewicz likely returning, as well as forwards Matthew Sop and Carson Rehkopf.
“I think if you’re a fan of the Kitchener Rangers, you will want to start watching this team now so you can say a few years from now ‘I was there when’, ‘I remember that player’s first goal’ or ‘I remember this play or that shift.'”
The Rangers begin their season with a home game against the Saginaw Spirit Friday, Sep. 29.
