Three local athletes compete on national stage this weekend

A whole slew of local athletes are competing at the highest level in their respective sports this weekend.

Kitchener’s Jamal Murray and Nic Hague are hunting for the Larry O’Brien Trophy and the Stanley Cup, while Listowel’s Corey Conners looks to win the R-B-C Canadian Open.

Former Grand River Renegade Jamal Murray and his Denver Nuggets take on the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals Friday. They led their series 2-1.

Kitchener will be cheering him on from Bobby O’Briens Irish Pub after over 200 people came to the Stanley Park Community Centre to watch Murray break a record in game three for the most points scored by a Canadian in an NBA Finals game.

Bobby O’Briens will also host the Stanley Cup Finals Game 4 watch party starting at 7 p.m. Saturday for former Kitchener Dutchman and current Vegas Golden Knights Nic Hague. The Golden Knights are in the same boat as the Nuggets, up 2-1 in their series over the Florida Panthers.

West Heights Public School are also showing love to the former West Heights Warrior on their front lawn sign.

All the while, Listowel’s Corey Conners is competing at the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto.

The last time a Canadian won the open was Pat Fletcher in 1954. You can follow his progress on this live leaderboard.
