Regional Chair Karen Redman reacts to dissolution of Peel

After the plan to dissolve Peel Region was announced by the province yesterday, it left questions about the future of Waterloo Region’s three cities (Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge) and four townships (North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich).

Chair for the Region of Waterloo Karen Redman was surprised that the province is choosing to break up Peel Region into three independent cities (Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga). She called it a “news breaking day.”

Redman shared her initial reaction to the announcement with CityNews.

“We do not want to be split up like Peel,” said Redman. “We got a strong history of collaboration and we’re looking forward to working with the province and a facilitator when their named. I think we’re a unique community and I would have concerns if we were split like Caledon, Mississauga and Brampton. We have always been stronger together.”

Redman added that for examples of strong cooperation, you don’t have to look any further than the region’s prospering urban centres, villages and towns.

Redman also told CityNews that the members of the community that she has discussed the split with are not interested in suffering a similar fate to what Peel Region is facing.

The region has been made up of seven municipalities since 1973.
