High-rise proposal looks to develop tallest buildings in Waterloo Region

A site in Kitchener is the proposed location for two of the tallest towers in Waterloo Region.

According to the planning justification report the proposal includes the development of two mixed use towers containing both residential and ground floor commercial space.

The two towers are planned to be 57 storeys and 51 storeys tall.

If approved by council they will be the tallest buildings in Waterloo Region.

Together they will contain 1,224 new units that break down to 795 one-bedroom units and 429 two-bedroom units.

The proposal also contains plans for a 13 storey podium that will connect both towers.

In terms of parking a total of 618 spots are in the proposal, 518 of which will be dedicated for residents.

Underground parking is included as well and will be designed with flood proofing measures.

The proposed site for the development is at the corner of Borden Avenue South and Charles Street East in Kitchener.

Currently that location is occupied by the Go Bananas recreation centre and Grand River Rocks indoor climbing gym.

That centre and much of the parking lot on the west side of the building are part of the proposed boundaries.

Planning documents suggest one of the reasons this site is being considered is due to it’s close proximity to public transit.

The Bordon ION station is located directly north of the site and the 2,7 and 205 bus routes are located within walking distance.

City planning staff have not yet prepared a recommendation for city council to consider.

An online public information session will be held on June 6th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the details of which can be found on the cities website.
