Two local high school students in running for national scholarships

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Two high school students from Waterloo Region are up for scholarships from the Loran Scholars Foundation.

Ellen Brisley of Kitchener's Cameron Heights Collegiate and Chloe Budakian of Laurel Heights Secondary School in Waterloo are among the 90 finalists from across Canada.

The foundation identifies students with character, service and leadership qualities.

“We know that such promising young people have the power to change the future for the better—they just need a launchpad and opportunities to grow. This is precisely what we offer Loran Scholars: an enrichment program of leadership development and diverse learning experiences that equip them to create positive change over the course of their lifetimes.” a news release explained.

National interviews will be held later this month in Toronto.

After that process has been completed, the foundation will grant up to 36 Loran Awards (valued at $100,000). Those not selected will receive $5,000 to help pay for their post-secondary education.
