Four injured in Kitchener house explosion (update)

Four people are in hospital following a late night townhouse house explosion in Kitchener.

Emergency crews responded to a unit at 150 Elm Ridge Drive, shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Waterloo Regional Police say the explosion caused extensive damage. There is significant structural damage to that unit and other neighbouring units.

The fence and windows facing the street, on the ground and second floor are all smashed. Debris from the home is also scattered around the yard, including a barbecue propane tank and bicycle.

A man and woman were transported to a hospital outside of the region with serious injuries. Two children were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the explosion has not been determined yet. Both police and the Ontario Fire Marshall are involved in the investigation.

The Red Cross will be assisting those who were displaced because of the explosion.
