Region seeking ways to improve Lancaster Street railway crossing

The region has begun conducting a study that will look into improving the railway crossing on Lancaster Street in Kitchener. 

The crossing is near the Victoria Street intersection which has caused traffic volume problems.

“There are some identified issues with the crossing, in particular with respect to traffic backups when trains are crossing the road,” said Peter Linn, a senior project manager with the region. “So we have some significant issues with traffic in the area in particular because the intersection of Victoria is so close to the crossing.”

As the study has just begun, all options are still being considered when it comes to improvements. Another problem the study will look to address are safety issues, as there have been several collisions at the crossing.

“Whenever we look at these types of improvements, we're also looking at how do we improve safety for pedestrians, and cyclists as well.” Linn said. “That has to be part of any alternative that we look at.”

Potential alternatives include building an overpass, or underpass for cars. 

The study is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. 

“We'll be producing a report which describes all the alternatives that were considered, what the advantages, and disadvantages are of each alternative. We'll be looking at the cost of each alternative as well,” said Linn. “Then, we'll present the report to regional council with a recommendation for which alternative should be implemented.”

Metrolinx, and members of the public will be consulted as a part of the study.
