New accessible housing called 'Trafalgar Circle' is set to be available in Kitchener later this year.
It's located on Trafalgar Avenue near Stanley Park Mall.
Work began on the project in January.
The housing will consist of single bedroom bungalows that are designed to be accessible for individuals in wheelchairs or that are struggling with mobility.
Susan Voll-Kraft is a realtor with RE/MAX and is selling the units. She explained some of the features the housing has to offer.
“All the units are accessible to wheelchairs,” Voll-Kraft said.
“Right from the street into the unit there are no steps.”
That will be just one of the features that make the bungalows accessible.
Handles on door and cabinets will be lower, and the garage is wider in width. There will also be extra space in the basement for storage.
Voll-Kraft said the project can be beneficial for a wide variety of people.
She gave an example of a son who wants his mother to move in as she recovers from a hip replacement.
“It could be a younger couple or someone with a significant other that has mobility issues,” she said.
“It doesn't have to be a senior, it can be anybody that would benefit from this type of unit.”
The housing is the first of its kind in the province and there is already a lot of interest in the project.
“To see the response of the couples who have come through, it really warms my heart,” said Voll-Kraft.
“I feel that we're really doing something to help.”
The first block of housing is expected to be ready in the fall, and reservations for the houses are being taken now.
