Local teens tutoring students in Ukraine

A youth-led organization started by local high school students has been working to tutor students in Ukraine.

It's called HomeworkHub and it pairs volunteer tutors with Ukrainians thousands of kilometres away.

They meet through Google Meet for 45-minute sessions once a week.

It started when organizers heard schools were shut down in Ukraine.

Phoebe Luo, co-founder and co-organizer of HomeworkHub said they wanted help out.

“So many students had to switch to online learning or some couldn't go to school at all. We heard from a couple of Ukrainian students about how they had to go to bomb shelters,” she said.

That made it difficult for these students to keep up with education, so Homework Hub organizers decided to specifically extend programs for Ukrainians and Ukrainian refugees.

Luo estimates around 60 Ukrainian students have used HomeworkHub's services recently.

Despite time differences up to 10 hours, she said the programs have run smoothly.

“It's mostly to accommodate the students, so the lessons are based on whatever the student needs help on, whatever the student wants to focus on. There's a lot of conversation as well to improve their conversational English,” she said.

Volunteers can sign up to be tutors, but grades will have to be up to par.

Luo said tutors will need at least an 85 per cent in the subject they want to tutor.

The organization accepts volunteers over 14, but police checks are required for volunteers over 18.
