Free rapid antigen test pop-ups at St. Jacobs, Kitchener markets (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

There's a strong demand for rapid antigen tests now that the province has modified eligibility for PCR testing for COVID-19.

Over the holiday season, the Ontario government started holding distribution pop-ups to hand out free rapid tests.

There have been a few so far in Waterloo Region that have all resulted in long line-ups, even in cold conditions.

Two more are now planned for local markets.

One is happening Saturday, January 8 at the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market at 878 Weber Street North.

The second is happening Friday, January 14 at the Kitchener Market at 300 King Street East.

At both pop-ups, the tests will be distributed beginning at 10 a.m. Supply will be limited.

For those looking to acquire a testing kit at the St. Jacobs pop-up, a spokesperson with the market said kits will be available at the log cabin on the southern end of the property along Farmers Market Road, with a line-up spanning across the main area of the market. Roughly 1,000 kits will be available, with staff turning visitors away once that stock is depleted.

The St. Jacobs Farmers' Market will still be operating at 50 per cent capacity, offering a variety of butchers, bakers and produce as well as items from crafters and artisans.
