Large housing development proposed for Waterloo

A vacant patch of land near the ION tracks in Waterloo could soon be home to a large housing development.

A developer wants to move ahead with three residential towers on Quiet Place, a triangular piece of land that's bounded by train tracks and a multi-use trail that connects Quiet Place to the Albert McCormick Community Centre.

The development would be 12-storeys in all, including a four-storey base.

It would be home to over 400 units, all either one or two bedrooms.

There was discussion at Waterloo council this week on why three bedroom units weren't part of the proposal.

Kristen Barisdale, the planning consultant for the developer, said much of the understanding from market research is that its dictating one or two bedroom units are what people are looking for more often.

Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky also commented that he hopes the developer considers work being done nearby that's connecting a trail from Victoria Park in Kitchener to the St. Jacob's Farmers Market.

“It will be a very bikeable community,” he said, adding that more than the minimum for bike parking would be advantageous to consider.

The proposal also calls for 424 vehicle parking spaces and 254 bike parking spaces.

A public meeting and council decision is expected sometime in December.

But there is hope that a public input session can be held beforehand.
