New Hospice centre is officially open in Waterloo

The region's newest palliative care officially opened on Sunday.

The Gies Family Centre is all about creating the 'home-like' feeling in residents' rooms which are designed to address the needs of the patients and their families.

“Each room is private with its washroom attached to it. There is space in the room for family members, pull-out couches for family members if they want to sleep overnight. A private patio and beds can also go outside, said Judy Nairn, executive director of Hospice of Waterloo Region.

The new space will continue to offer palliative and bereavement support services.

“This includes day programs, hair salon services, complementary therapy such as massage and reiki. There are counselling options, community education, and medical clinic onsite.”

Nairn adds they also offer services to the residents for end-of-life,  for those who don't want to be in a hospital and can't be at home. Gies Family Centre is an alternative.

Additionally, the centre has outdoor activities where family members or patients can enjoy the meditation garden, contemplation areas, and walking trails.

Funding for the new facility came from the Ministry of Health, the City of Waterloo, the Region of Waterloo, and an Ontario Trillium grant. The community raised $15-million in support of this new centre.

Nairn adds they will have on-going fundraisers in which community members can show their support.
