New name for local organization that supports refugees

It's a new name, but the goal remains the same: to help refugees go through the claim process and help them adjust to new life in Canada.

The Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support (MCRS) has re-branded itself, and will be known as the COMPASS Refugee Centre moving forward.

The charitable organization said they're looking to encompass the whole community with this move, as they continue to support those seeking refuge amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials said over 1,600 claimants were already living in KW when the borders closed almost a year ago, and those people still need critical support.

“The 1,600 men, women and children we currently support have fled their countries, families, and careers, in situations that are hard to imagine,” said Shelley Campagnola, Executive Director for the COMPASS Refugee Centre.

“Most often, our clients are educated, skilled, and have experienced deep trauma. For these people, it is essential that we ensure that they find a welcoming community here, and receive help as they navigate the refugee claim process.”

COMPASS is located at 675 Queen Street South, Unit 230 in Kitchener, and open four days a week.
