WRPS cleared after man breaks hand in holding cell

Waterloo Regional Police have been cleared by the Special Investigations Unit of any wrongdoing following an incident in one of their Kitchener holding cells in October.

On Oct. 20, A 32-year-old man was arrested for two counts of breaching an undertaking.

The following day, he attended WASH (weekend and statutory holiday) court and was then escorted back to the cell. 

He then slapped the stainless-steel sink/toilet in his cell, breaking his right hand.

The SIU determined the man's injury was self-inflicted.

The Special Investigations Unit investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or a sexual assault allegation.
