Guilty verdict for 41-year-old for the murder of his grandmother

Erick Buhr, 41, has been found guilty for the murder of his 88-year-old grandmother, Viola Erb.

The Waterloo Region Record reported that it took jurors less than three hours to reach a guilty verdict for second-degree murder for the Baden man on Monday.

Erb, the co-founder of the transportation company Erb Group, was killed in her Baden home in September 2022.

Throughout the trial, and in the leadup to the jury’s decision, Buhr was adamant of his innocence.

He admitted to lying to police, changing his blood-spattered clothes, and using cocaine on the day his grandmother was killed.

Buhr spent a portion of the trial defending himself after firing his defence lawyer, asking for a mistrial because of the lawyer’s alleged mishandling of his defence.

According to CTV Kitchener, the judge told the jury that the law requires Buhr to be sentenced to life in prison, but they were asked to provide recommendations on parole eligibility.

Ten of the 12 jurors recommended Buhr serve at least 20 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

He’ll be back in court on Nov. 29 as a date will be set for sentencing.
