Long-term care residents head home after a long stay at special COVID-19 unit

By Lisa Drew

Forest Heights Revera long-term care home has struggled with the effects of the pandemic. There have been 51 COVID-19 related deaths reported there.

Resident Mary Koebel tells 570 NEWS she has spent 12 weeks at the unit, and it was just last week that she was finally able to have an outdoor visit with her husband.

The 70-year-old says “Oh … it was really nice.”  He's set to see her tomorrow for a bigger visit at Forest Heights.

The grandmother says she has mixed feelings leaving her care team and new friends at Freeport, but is excited to see her nurses at Forest Heights again.

Koebel says she has probably lost some friends due to COVID-19, and will learn more upon her return today.

Koebel is among 26 residents returning to Forest Heights over the next week.

The province had handed management of that long-term care home over to St. Mary's General Hospital due to the outbreak after it was coded “Red”.
