Region to reopen waste drop-off sites May 4

The Region of Waterloo is reopening the Waterloo and Cambridge waste transfer stations for residential waste drop-off on May 4.
Although it's not quite business as usual. There will be protocols in place to maintain social distancing.
“We have plexiglass in place to help our staff remain physically distant from the customers, we won't be able to do cash transactions, residents coming to drop off waste will have to either pay by debit or credit.” said Cari Rastas-Howard, supervisor of communications and programs with the Region of Waterloo's waste management division.
She said they will also be limiting the number of people on site.
“We expect the sites to be very busy, and the line up will be very long. So, if residents have the ability to continue holding onto their waste, if they don't absolutely have to bring it, it's probably in their best interest to do so to avoid those line ups.”
Residents will be able to drop off garbage, large items, yard waste, organics, recyclables, and household hazardous waste. Regular fees, including the $5 minimum fee will still apply.
Rastas-Howard said they are continuing restrictions on curbside pick up.
“We can't reimplement bulky item collection, yet, for the protection of our crews at the curb, the longer the situation has gone on the more imperative it would be to allow residents to drop off their household hazardous waste and large garbage items.”
The Region will continue to collect bagged garbage, blue box, green bin, and yard waste materials according to the regular schedule.
