Meals on Wheels still trying to maintain pace during pandemic

In an era where people are being told to stay home, Meals on Wheels is still in operation, as they look to assist seniors living independently.

Meals on Wheels, a program dedicated to providing nutritious food to seniors, admits keeping pace has been a bit of a challege throughout the pandemic.

Will Pace, the Executive Director of Community Support Centre — which runs Meals on Wheels — tells 570 NEWS it's certainly been a challenge as everyone is facing difficult times right now.

“What we've done to ensure the flow of meals is that we suspended operation of our kitchen, for the sake of our clients as well as staff safety,” he said.

“During that time, we still provided over 1,000 frozen meals in terms of bulk delivery to get them through to the time of that suspension.”

He says since it's begun, they've had staff driving the frozen meal delivery for screening and safety purposes.

“Now, we're looking to get our volunteers re-engaged in terms of everything to our meals program to others,” Pace added, “Certainly, looking for opportunities to recruit some new volunteers who want to get involved to make sure seniors and the rest of our clients get the services they need.”

Pace says that they are now in the process of starting up the kitchen program again, and says they are looking forward to getting meals to their clients as soon as possible.

They're also looking for those to think about and identify someone who has been struggling to feed themselves during this pandemic, so they can get proper attention.
