Gas prices are low in Waterloo Region right now, which could encourage some consumers to fill up on gas before the price goes back up.
Bob Boomer – a truck driver who's job is to drive around a huge fuel tanker from station to station to deliver a fresh supply of gas, says he's had to visit local gas stations a little more frequently since the price drop.
While filling up the 75,000 litre supply tank at the GOCO gas station on Ira Needles on Wednesday, he reflects on how much gas was sold at just one station, in one day.
“In 24 hours, they've gone through approximately 30,000 litres of gasoline. That's a little bit more than normal, but then again, the weather's getting nice and typically, when the weather's getting nice, more people get out.” Boomer says if you're looking for even lower prices, you should think about driving outside Waterloo Region.
“London right now, I believe, is in that 88 to 90 cents range – they've been in the 90s for over a week now. If you drive down to the reserves, and they're typically 25 cents cheaper per litre. Stratford area is still a little over a dollar right now but different areas, different prices, it all fluctuates, and it all evens out.”
Early on in his shift on Wednesday, says he hasn't seen any long lineups at gas stations so far.
“Typically when you have a price war, people are more dedicated to where they get the gas instead of loyalty. Loyalty goes as far as the price of gas.”
Boomer works for a McKeown Petroleum location based in Stratford.
570 NEWS also spoke with some motorists who were filling up on Wednesday.
Local consumers seem to be split on whether the gas price drop is worth taking advantage of:
-James says the price drop doesn't really affect him, “It is what it is right? When you got to fill up for gas, you fill up and it's nice when it's cheap. I usually pay $100 for a three quarter tank of gas.”
-Kaitlyn says her car is gas-efficient, “I drive a Chevy Cruze and it's really well on gas, but I'm happy to see it go down – only because I also own a big truck and a Harley so as long as these prices are good, summer's going to be great for us. I would pay about $50 bucks for a full tank of gas, so today I'm hoping to pay $40 – so give me that extra ten bucks to go buy some shoes or something.”
-Ninu says it's a good time to fill up all her family cars, “It's been a while since it's been so low like this so it's nice, a good change. I'm going to be filling up because it's low. We have four cars at home, so gas prices really do matter. In my Suzuki right now, a full tank would cost just shy of $50.”
-Shawn says the low prices are a bonus, “I have half a tank of gas and I need gas, so I'm stopping for fuel. The price is down so yeah – I'm getting gas. It should be cheaper but it's not so – we're in Canada, we do what we can, right?
-Sara says she just needs gas, “I would have to buy no matter what, but it's nice, it's great! It's a bonus that it's low.”
-Andre says he's filling up just to take advantage of low prices, “My tank's only half full, but I saw the price and I thought why not fill up while it's still low. I might tell my relatives that the prices are low.”
-Angie says the low prices are amazing, “I'm filling up because it's low right now and I like to have a full tank… I always fill up, but the price is so attractive, so it gives you the flexibility to take your time to shop and drive around. When you find a good price you do it because you have that convenience and not desperation where it's almost empty and you got to fill up.”
