The utility was awarded a Gold Award in the Psychological Safety category and a Silver Award in the Utilities category from Canada’s Safest Employers during a special award ceremony on October 22.
“The mental health, well-being, and safety of our employees is always a top priority for Waterloo North Hydro,” said WNH's President and CEO Rene Gatien. “We are honoured to be recognized with this award.”
WNH is an industry leader in employee health and safety and invests heavily in the mental well-being of its employees. Mental health awareness is also brought to the forefront through WNH's annual support of Bell Let’s Talk Day and the Movember movement. This summer, WNH's employees also participated in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo’s five-week Road to Mental Well-being campaign.
The utility’s commitment to safety is evident as WNH has recorded more than five consecutive years with zero lost-time injuries. WNH’s public safety education efforts also includes the School Safety Program, which features a fun, and informative presentation from ‘Lectric Larry, a retired WNH employee. In 2018, Larry presented to 3,548 students, or 85 per cent of the students in WNH’s service territory. More than 18,000 students have participated in the School Safety Program since 2012.
Canada’s Safest Employer Awards were launched in 2011 to recognize companies from across Canada with outstanding accomplishment in promoting the health and safety of their employees. Awards are presented in 10 industry-specific categories, ranging from hospitality, to mining and natural resources. Winners are selected based on a number of occupational health and safety elements, including employee training, OHS management, incident investigations, emergency preparedness and other health and safety initiatives.
