Traffic woes continue at Kitchener’s Conestoga College

With the school year in full swing now, traffic woes have returned to the Doon campus of Conestoga College.
The issue is the amount of people parking on campus, combined with the fact that there is only one road to enter and exit campus. The resulting traffic issues have been the source of headaches for both staff and students.
“It's backing up, and causing a lot of frustration,” said Tom Galloway, the Chair of the Planning and Works Committee.
He says the region had plans to rectify the problem.
“Unfortunately we were all set and ready to implement a Upass system for the students, which I am sure would have alleviated the situation. But, it was cancelled by the provincial government with a new regulation that they came out with in the interim period.
The addition of the universal pass would promote more students to use public transit rather then driving and parking on campus, that's according to Galloway.
He said the Region has appealed to the province for an exemption, “Certainly the traffic situation at the college could be alleviated to some degree if we have this pass in place, so we are still hopeful.”
As of right now, the Region of Waterloo is spending about eight million dollars to provide a multi-use trail that extends from the 401 to Ottawa Street. He says the trail that is expected to be completed later this fall, will allow people to bike or walk away from the busy stretch of Homer Watson, “I think this will also alleviate to some extent the traffic issues.”
