Protesters ask Tim Horton’s to rethink single-use coffee cups

By Aastha Shetty

Three children are protesting Tim Horton's use of single use cups through a nation-wide petition online.

The petition already has more than 105,000 signatures and counting.

Coordinator Kathleen Barsoum from the Region of Waterloo Waste Management Division tells The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS that their initiative addresses an important environment issue for all Canadians.

She is reminding residents that paper coffee cups can be recycled in our region.

“As long as you take out the stir stick and the Kleenex, seperate the lid, put the lid and the paper coffee cup both in the recycling blue box. However, what can be recycled does change region-to-region. Not all regions do recycle paper coffee cups. Kudos to these young people for going ahead and starting this petition. Wonderful.”

She says the region tried to put coffee cups into the green bin for a short period of time, but there were just too many being thrown away.

“It did impact the final quality of the compost. So when the processor asked us 'no more coffee cups,' the technology changed at the recycling paper mill, where we couldn't take coffee cups prior to that. They had some new technology where we could now take the paper cups to the blue cups.”

The children spearheading the online protest are based in Calgary.

Mya Chau, Eve Helman and Ben Duthie are between the ages of 12 to 16 years old.
