Distracted driving remains a priority in the province as the New Year brought in heavier charges, and that's why Safe Communities of Wellington County is returning with their annual Distracted Driving Video Contest.
It's their third year returning with the contest, but the dangers of distracted driving haven't change. According to Safe Communities, young drivers make up almost one fifth of road-related injuries and fatalities while only making up 12 per cent of licensed drivers.
Christine Veit the Program Director of Safe Communities of Wellington County says, “Distracted driving has replaced drinking and driving as the number one killer in teenagers and young adults across Canada.”
The group is inviting young people 19 years and under to create a 60 second video explaining “What Distracted Driving Means to you”.
Veit says they will be judging videos not just on the dangers of distracted driving, but solutions as well.
“It is difficult, cause we're all so use to, especially with the texting and the phone, we're all so used to reacting to that phone, to that beep, to that buzz.”
Additional rules include:
1. Outlining the negative consequences of distracted driving and the laws surrounding it
2. No depictions of any brand or logo or any specific names of organizations, which includes copywritten songs and jingle
3. No depictions of illegal activity, criminal offenses, profanity, sex, or violence on individuals or organization
4. The operation of a moving motor vehicle is not permitted
5. A complete and sign the consent forms for the contest
The winners of the contest will have their work shared at local elementary schools and high schools as well as social media.
There a cash prize of $75 for each municipality within Wellington County and a grand prize of $225.
Any high school students participating in the contest can also apply for up to eight of their volunteer hours.
The contest closes Thursday, April 18, 2019. For further details and the entry form visit here.
