Waterloo adding three more skateparks

By Blair Adams

There will soon be more options for skateboarders in Waterloo.

The city is planning to add three more skateparks.

Three locations have already been selected for the new action sports parks:

  • Albert McCormick Community Centre
  • RIM Park
  • Stork Family YMCA/John M. Harper Branch Library

“Waterloo loves its skateboard park in uptown,” City of Waterloo Landscape Architect, Karen Anderson, said in a release.

“It’s time to invest in action sport parks closer to key neighbourhoods.” added Anderson, who is the lead on the project.

According to the city, the three most common action sports practiced in Waterloo's public spaces are skateboarding, BMX and mountain biking.

The city will work with New Line Skateparks Inc. in designing the new parks.

They designed the Waterloo Skatepark on Father David Bauer Drive.

It's expected those designs will be presented to council in March.

The city also said construction of one two of the three parks will begin in late 2019.

An online questionnaire will also be open until January 31 to gather feedback on possible designs.
